We are protesting La Playa Carmel’s callous refusal to commit to re-offer the hotel jobs to the former workers–over half of whom had worked there more than 20 years.  The hotel has rehired only 3 of 113 former workers.  The hotel closed and workers lost their jobs a year-and-a-half ago, November 1, 2011.  Following nearly a year of demonstrations aimed at the former owner, our protests against the new owner began June 6th, 2012, when Grossman Company Properties reopened the hotel.

We waited a couple of days this year, because May Day was reserved for Immigration Reform actions, but join us for a slightly belated celebration of International Workers’ Day!

Ramon Ramirez, a 24-year member of the union, works as a steward at the Hyatt Regency Monterey.  He has led his co-workers and other union members in the campaign to rehire the former La Playa Hotel workers.  Mr. Ramirez had worked for 22 years at La Playa Hotel before new ownership closed it in November 2011 only to reopen in June 2012 with only three of the former 113 workers.  Mr. Ramirez is a union leader and member of Local 483’s area-wide worker committee.

A native of Jalisco, Mexico, Mr. Ramirez lives with his family in Seaside.
